Does FiberLean Sell MFC?
Understanding the Difference Between Supplying MFC and Producing It
It’s the misconception we encounter most often, and it’s the one that causes the most confusion early in a conversation. People assume FiberLean is an MFC supplier. Predominantly, we are not.
What Does FiberLean do?
FiberLean designs and supplies the grinding equipment that enables paper and board mills to produce microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) in-house, using their own fiber, within their own production environment. The distinction isn’t semantic – it changes the entire economic and strategic picture.
What’s the difference between buying MFC, and buying an MFC grinder from FiberLean?
When a mill buys MFC as a product from an external supplier, they’re paying for the raw material, the production process, the supplier’s margin, the logistics and shipping, and the ongoing dependency that comes with any purchased input. They’re also accepting whatever specification that supplier produces.
When a mill installs a FiberLean grinder and produces MFC themselves, the economics shift entirely. The fiber conversion happens on-site. The cost of production is driven by energy and maintenance, not external pricing. The specification is controllable. And critically, the capability is owned by the mill.
This matters in an industry where raw material costs are under constant pressure, where sustainability credentials are increasingly scrutinised, and where the ability to differentiate product performance can determine whether a mill survives the next decade.
But can FiberLean Supply MFC?
Yes. While FiberLean is primarily known for designing and supplying industrial grinding systems that enable customers to produce MFC on-site, we can also supply MFC directly where required.
This can be particularly valuable during application development, laboratory evaluation, pilot trials or early-stage feasibility work, allowing organisations to assess the potential of MFC before committing to in-house production capability.
However, our experience consistently shows that the greatest long-term value is often realised when MFC production is integrated directly into the manufacturing process. On-site production gives manufacturers greater control over material properties, quality consistency, production scheduling and operating costs, while eliminating the need to transport a highly water-based material over long distances.
For many organisations, supplied MFC is an important starting point. Our goal is to help customers determine the most effective route to achieving the benefits of MFC, whether that begins with supplied material, in-house production, or a combination of both.
How can FiberLean help mills looking to use MFC?
FiberLean’s role is to provide the equipment, the technical expertise, and the support needed to make in-house MFC production work reliably and economically. Our team – the largest concentration of MFC specialists in the market – works alongside mills from initial trials through to full-scale production. Then we step back.
We are a grinder equipment company. We happen to specialise exclusively in MFC. That singular focus is precisely what makes us different from both the large equipment conglomerates and the MFC material suppliers who have entered this space.
If you’ve been thinking of FiberLean as an MFC supplier, we understand why. But we’d invite you to look again – because what we actually offer is something considerably more valuable: control.
